money
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Money is anything that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts. The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value, and occasionally, a standard of deferred payment. Money originated as commodity money, then evolved to easier-to-transport representative money, in which a certificate stands for a fixed quantity of a commodity. However, nearly all contemporary money systems at the national level are fiat money systems. Fiat money is without value as a physical commodity, and derives its value by being declared by a government to be legal tender; that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment within the national boundaries of the country, for "all debts, public and private". By law, the refusal of a legal tender (offering) extinguishes the debt in the same way acceptance does. The money supply of a country is usually held to consist of currency (banknotes and coins) and demand deposits or 'bank money' (the balance held in checking accounts and savings accounts). These demand deposits usually account for a much larger part of the money supply than currency. Bank money is intangible and exists only in the form of various bank records. Despite being intangible, bank money still performs the basic functions of money, as checks are generally accepted as a form of payment and as a means of transferring ownership of deposit money. Q. I'm 22 years old, and wanting to purchase a house in the next year or two. I have money in savings right now which is making terribly low interest. What would be my best move? I'd like to invest the money short term, but I'd like to make a good amount of money doing so. Is that possible and how? CD's and Money Market accounts just aren't gonna give me the results I want. Asked by JKP0011 - Mon Oct 15 20:55:29 2007 - - 7 Answers - 5 Comments A. As someone has already mentioned, the only way for you to make a lot of money in a short amount of time is through taking on investments with greater risk in order to be exposed to possible greater returns. However, if you're wanting to purchase a house in the next year or two, you obviously don't want to risk losing your possible deposit. Beware of any "shortcuts" some people might suggest to the road to getting rich, as if it really worked a lot more people would do it. In the short term, your best options are probably to try and earn some more money rather than earning interest or capital gains from investing your money. In the long term your options are a little bit broader though. I know this advice may not seem that helpful, but… [cont.] Answered by Eugene L - Mon Oct 15 21:29:08 2007 How much money would you give a 2 yr college graduate?
Q. How much money would you give a 2 yr college graduate for graduation? The graduate already makes a ton of money between her and her husband (they are doing better than most people I know in the money department). Okay so how much if the graduate is your daughter/step-daughter or other relative? Thanks ahead of time. We are on a limited income and already purchased a $25 gift card. Is that waaayyy too little? Asked by veryscared4 - Fri Nov 6 17:44:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. How about something to cover a nice dinner to celebrate? Maybe $150? Don't know how tight your financial situation is but use your judgement. Good luck.
