How long can a small goldfish be kept in 15 gallons?
Q. As mentioned in title, my friend has a fully cycled 15 gallon tank. He's getting a tiny goldfish that's only about 4 inches long. How long can he keep him in the 15 gallons before he has to upgrade to 20 gallons? It's a fancy goldfish not a common goldfish

A. A fancy goldfish can potentially reach up to 8" and if water quality is good it could start out in a 15 gallon tank with a filter big enough for a 30g or larger tank. It is really best for this type of fish to go in a 30g or larger tank in the first place though. Because goldfish are so messy it is important to have a filter rated for at least double the tank size and do 25-50% water changes at least once a week. Having said all this though I will let you know that my grandmother has a fantail goldfish in Michigan that lives in a pond outside during the summer and a 20g tank in the winter. She has had this fish for many years already and it has only grown to 5-6", mostly in the first year she had it. When it is inside it has a filter… [cont.]
